Our Services
Scouting Journey
As a Scout Group we provide scouting to young people from the ages of 6 to 14. We very often find that the Scouts then continue their scouting journey by moving onto a local Explorers Group or even remain within the 1st Finchfield Group as Young Leaders.
We run three sections for children:
Beavers (age 6 - 8)
Cubs (age 8 - 10.5)
Scouts (age (10.5 - 14)
Across all the sections we have Young Leaders who have stayed within the Group to provide support to the younger people in the group and further develop their skills.
Beavers, Cubs and Scouts are young people who:
- Master new skills and try new things.
- Have fun and go on adventures.
- Make friends.
- Are curious about the world around them.
- Help others and make a difference, on their own doorstops and beyond.
6-8 Years
Who are Beavers?
Every week we meet on a Thursday evening and they gather in groups called Beaver Colonies to hop, skip and jump their way through lots of different games and activities - achieving anything they set their minds to, and having lots of fun along the way.
What do Beavers get up to:
Being a Beaver is all about growing and learning in small but mighty ways. Here are some of the things you’ll get up to with your friends.
You’ll spend lots of time outdoors with your Colony. Together you might go on nature walks, have a beaver sleepover within the hut or go on Group camp for a weekend. Instead of learning from books as you do at school, you’ll figure the world out by exploring, playing and doing.
The most important skills you’ll learn at Beavers are the ones that will make you feel super strong standing on your own two feet. We call these character skills such as Integrity and Initiative, it’s all about having the courage to try new things and learn from them.
Helping Others
Beavers work as a team to help other people, in their local communities and beyond. Whether they’re changing the whole world or helping a friend take the leap to try something new on a rainy Thursday night, they always lend a hand.
8-10.5 Years
Who are Cubs?
Every week we meet on a Tuesday evening and they gather in groups called Cub Packs to take part in lots of interesting and challenging activities - achieving anything they set their minds to, and having lots of fun along the way.
What do Cubs get up to?
Being a Cub is all about growing and learning on what has been learnt during their time as a beaver. If you are new to scouting, your will soon pick things up and be able to join in with your friends who will help you along the way. Here are some of the things you’ll get up to with your friends.
You’ll spend lots of time outdoors with your Pack. Together you might go on hikes, weekend camps, have a cub sleepover within the hut, visit the local fire station or go on Group camp for a weekend.
Cubs learn by doing, and so will you. Some of the skills you develop will be practical, like knowing how to cook a delicious meal or give someone first aid. Others will allow you to become a master at your chosen hobby, or help you to share that hobby with others. But the most important skills you’ll learn at Cubs are the ones that will make you feel confident and happy in your own skin.
Helping Others
Cubs work as a team to help other people. Together, you’ll learn about global issues and what we can all do to help solve them. You’ll also make an impact in your own community, through activities such as fundraising, visiting a local retirement home at Christmas and attending local seasonal services at church.
10.5-14 Years
Who are Scouts?
Every week we meet on a Wednesday night and they gather in groups called Scout Troops to take part in challenging activities - achieving anything they set their minds to, and having lots of fun along the way.
What do Scouts get up to?
Being a Scout as all about discovering the world on your own terms and making the most of what you have, wherever and whoever you are.
Alongside your new friends, you’ll master the skills that will help you weather the storms of life, and try things you’d never get the chance to do at home or at school - working with trained volunteers to achieve whatever you set your mind to.
You’ll spend lots of time outdoors with your Troop. Together you might go on night hikes, back to basics weekend camps, sponsored (Themed) sleepovers at the hut, District activities or go on Group camp for a weekend.
Onward development
1st Finchfield Scout Group has local Explorer groups who are available to allow our young people to continue their scouting journey to the age of 18. Or they can remain within the group as we are proud to be able to retain them as Young Leaders within the group if they wish to stay.
14-18 Years
Who are Explorers?
Explorers are a go-getting group of young people aged 14 to 18. Together, they make up the fourth section of the Scouts.
What do Explorers get up to?
Being an Explorer is all about discovering the world on your own terms and making the most of what you have, wherever and whoever you are.
Alongside your new friends, you’ll master the skills that will make you feel stronger and happier in the long run, and try things you’d never get the chance to do at home or at school.
Whether you’re hiking to faraway lands or building a robot in your local town hall, you’ll have the freedom to choose what you’d like to do, and work together with adults to make it happen.
Start small but think big:
Explorers start small but think big. They stand up for what they believe and make a difference on their own doorstops, confident in the knowledge that their daily actions add up.
Seek out the answers to big questions
Explorers seek out the answers to the big questions, and to the smaller questions that don’t seem to matter but really should. Most importantly, they say yes more often than they say no - whether they’re signing up for their first major hike across Europe, or writing their first line of code, or accepting the last of the toasted marshmallows.
